About the Academie

Louis XIV established the Academie Nationale de Musique et de Danse in 1661.

Louis' dancemaster at the Academy, Beauchamp, was the first person to use a formal notation to record the structure and sequence of the basic ballet steps. Those he recorded are the same steps that today form the basis of classical ballet.

With Louis' passion for dance and his establishment of the Academie Nationale, he was almost singlehandedly responsible for the emergence of the first truly professional dancers in Europe. These skilled, highly trained dancers were able to perform ever more sophisticated and complex ballet techniques than had ever before been attempted.
