Buckfast AbbeyBuckfast Abbey stands in the middle of one of King John's Royal Hunting Grounds It took a handful of monks 32 years to build the Abbey and they did so from the ground up, finishing in 1937 The Abbey Church was built as funds allowed; mainly piecemeal. Despite this work was carried out continually until the whole church was completed, thirty-two years later. The builders usually comprised four monks but occasionally ran to six. They started at the east end of the church building the sanctuary, transepts and two of the bays of the nave. Funds were low at first and this meant the monks had to cut and dress the stone themselves but later as more funds started to flow they were able to buy pre-cut and dressed stone direct from the quarries.
