The Reivers

In the days of yore when the border between Scotland and England was ill-defined, raiding parties from Scottish and English strong families would cross the border stealing cattle, burning and plundering. And this included the kidnap and holding to ransom of noble folk. These families were known as "reivers" and this name is the source of the term "bereaved" (be-reived).

Comlongon Castle was one of the holding places near the border on the Scottish side where the kidnapped would end up. They were held until either their ransom was paid, they were exchanged for an opposite number ..or they met their untimely end.
