No enemy anemone

Try saying that quickly! These anemones featured in a breeding pool in Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium.

The soft blues and pinks of the anemones belie the unemotional killing machines that they truly are. The fronds gently swaying in the slight currents curl up on the slightest bump, and are so "sticky" that nothing of the right size stands a chance.

Drawn in slowly to the mouth parts, with frond after front overlaying the unlucky prey - struggle is useless; it's a foregone conclusion. A few minutes - or hours later, depending on the size of morsel to be digested, the anemone reflowers to what you see here.
