Old furniture

A photo of a 17th or 18th century carved chair found in a hotel stairwell landing in Northallerton, West Yorkshire.

The carvings adorning the backrest are of roses and what appear to be palm fronds.

It is quite likely, given where the chair is and its age, that the carvings are an indirect reference to the Rosa alba and Rosa gallica, the emblems of the Duke of York and the House of Lancaster - White Rose, Red Rose, respectively, in the times of the war of the roses.
