According to Lithuanian folklore a girl of humble birth called Egle (means fir tee in Lithuanian) fell in love with a handsome young sea priince. The sea prince's true form was a grass snake. Egle married her prince and lived under the sea. So that she and her sons and daughters could return to a life above the sea, Egle's brothers conspired and killed the prince. Egel in her grief turned her sons into trees her daughter into an asp. Egle then became a fir tree, her namesake.
