Primeval pool

The land of the earth has spent more time looking like this than in any other of its many aspects.

These softly bubbling, near boiling pools of mud sit directly on top of a cooling(?) magma chamber on the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean.

Apparantly one of them formed after one of the locals was jumping up and down on the surface showing how hard the crust was, when he broke through and sank into the crust up to his waist. He was rescued but suffered terrible burns on his legs.
