Solidified lava

Where the land meets the sea on St. Lucia, its volcanic origin can clearly be seen. Great solidified welts and gouts of lava - even some drips frozen in the act - are there for all to see.

And for long years the vegetation waited its time, finding and exploiting toeholds and footholds until it crowned the now quiescent outpouring. The once boiling, hissing seas are quiet in their victory as they slowly caress the cliffs to black volcanic sand in the never-ending beat.
