This image: Britannia And Lion Monument : britannia-memorial.jpg
|
MonumentA monumnet of Britannia and a lion. The inscription reads 'He blew with his winds and they were scattered'. On the face shown is a cameo of Sir Walter Raleigh and around the base are cannons and cannon balls on monkeys. As a by the way, the saying 'cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey' comes from the times that ships, armed with cannon and with balls stacked as shown, first went far enough south to hit really cold weather. The stand that holds the cannon balls in their pyramid stack was made of brass and in the cold brass shrinks faster than the iron of the balls, so they would all come tumbling off - hence the saying.
