Blue Chinese Opera Mask

This style of traditional chinese opera mask is known as Xia Houdun. Rather than wearing a mask, usually the actors' faces are made up by layer on layer of make-up.

The colours have special meaning and indicate the morality and temperament of the character. Blue often symbolises savageness and fierceness and can also speak on characteristics like arrogance. Yellow indicates the same but milder characterstic as blue. It also points to the clever, sometimes devious, thinker who conceals his thoughts.
