Akhenaten - Aten: disc of the sun

The death mask of Akhenaten with crook and flail. Akhenaten introduced a monotheistic culture but by the time Tutankhamen (originally called Tutankhaten) was fully in power, it was back to the polytheistic, many-gods religion.

Some scholars believe that the priests were so powerful that their anger at the change to their religion resulted in pharonic intrigue ater the death of Akhenaten and the subsequent pressure on Tutankhaten to revert to the old ways and to change his name to Tutankhamen.
